Over the past year, I have embarked on a journey across the United States and England, exploring college programs designed to support students with Learning Disabilities (LD) and Neurodivergent (ND) needs.
As a former special education teacher, I am passionate about discovering and promoting innovative approaches in higher education that accommodate students facing physical, learning, social, and emotional challenges.
With an increasing number of students registering with LD/ND needs in colleges nationwide, the importance of inclusive college programs, special education resources, and accommodations for diverse learners cannot be overstated.
In this blog, I’m delighted to share two standout programs that are making strides in fostering an inclusive and empowering educational experience:
Each of these programs offers unique, tailored approaches to accommodate the diverse needs of LD/ND students. Join me as we delve into these innovative educational opportunities that are redefining what it means to support students with unique challenges and celebrate their accomplishments on the road to college success.
The University of Connecticut’s Beyond Access Program
Established in 1984, the Beyond Access Program at the University of Connecticut (UConn), a public university, has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of its diverse student population. As a comprehensive support system, the program serves about 15% of the student body and is open to all, without limitations based on disability, diagnosis, or evaluation scores.
With a strong emphasis on student interaction and individual needs, Beyond Access offers a wide range of supports that go beyond typical high school accommodations.
Although there is a fee for service, the program’s effectiveness is evident in its achievements, with 96% of students making progress and maintaining an average GPA of 3.08. Services provided include:
- Academic Adjustments
- Accessible Transportation
- Alternate Media
- Assistive Technology
- Assistive Communication
- Dining Accommodations
- Reduced Course Load
- Residential Accommodations
- Service and Emotional Support Animals
- Technology-based Note Taking
- Testing Accommodations
Bridging the gap between access and success, students in the Beyond Access program have the autonomy to choose the support they require, fostering independence and lifelong skills.
The program’s structure includes:
- Weekly meetings with strategy instructors
- Individualized support hours based on student needs
- Student-defined goals (2-3 per student)
- Strategic instruction and progress monitoring
To help students acclimate to campus life, those enrolled in the program are invited to arrive three days before other freshmen for an immersive orientation experience.
Communication is key in the Beyond Access program, with weekly student meetings and open collaboration with families. Interested students and their families are encouraged to reach out to the following contacts for more information:
