Successful College Admissions

Introduction

It has been my honor to support students and families though the college admissions process for over 30 years, first as a high school counselor in Maryland and, since 2014, as an independent college counselor.

One of the keys to successful college admissions is for a student to visit the colleges. I myself visit at least 15-20 colleges per year so that when I put a school on a student’s list, I know that the school and the student would be a good fit. Think of it the same as purchasing a home. You wouldn’t spend that kind of money without walking through and checking to make sure you will be happy there.

Visiting a college before going there, to me, is the same as purchasing a home. A student who, if possible, walks the campus, samples the food, checks out a dorm, and talks to a professor, is more confident in their college choice than a student who decides on a college simply by checking out the website.

College Admissions

There are experts on campus to answer questions. Colleges know that families want to ask questions about admissions and financial aid, so those resources are likely available year-round. exciting time because of the changes they encounter, and because of the enormous responsibilities for personal and intellectual growth. While in high school you learned how to find, organize and absorb information and these skills will be quite valuable to you in college. Your teachers took the primary responsibility for structuring and assigning the subject matter, and for monitoring your progress as you mastered it. High school teachers must, by law, have skill and training in how learning occurs and how best to teach.

Since 2014, I have supported students and families through all aspects of the college process. Many of my families have asked me to help their second, third, even fourth child through this process.

The colleges listed below are only some of the many schools my students have been accepted to. I attribute this not only to the depth of my knowledge and experience with all aspects of the college admissions process but also to my commitment to continuing to visit colleges.

With most colleges offering two information sessions and tours a day, even in the summer, many families cram visits to several universities over the course of a few days. Big urban schools, like NYU, tend to have robust summer sessions with a lot of students on campus, so teens and their families can get a good idea of what the campus is like during the regular school year. Plan in advance during your student’s junior year. Many larger schools offer summer sessions, so visit those schools during the summer and focus on smaller suburban or rural colleges during the school year.
