I spent a relaxing, informative spring afternoon in March touring the University of Pennsylvania. One didn’t have to walk far to view evidence of the budding spring flowers and examples of the history of Philadelphia. Founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1740, UPenn is a medium size campus that delivers a rigorous, accomplished education to all who attend. Penn is one of the top tier research institutions as well as one of only eight Ivy League institutions in the US.
Academics & Programs at UPenn
There are multiple colleges housed within the university’s system, including Business, Engineering, Arts and Sciences, and Direct-entry Nursing. Penn’s programs are intentionally interdisciplinary. Students who are undecided about their major should apply to the Arts and Sciences college as it’s designed for students to spend time considering all their options. The nursing program is deliberately small to allow students the opportunity for a high-quality hands-on education.
Founded in 1881 as the world’s first collegiate business school, The Wharton School is globally recognized for academic leadership across every major discipline of business education. The Engineering College offers innovative and world-class experiences to students, studying all engineering disciplines. A lot of students get involved in research. Most classes are taught by tenured PhD professors.
Admissions Requirements & Application Strategy
Students interested in Penn should visit this vibrant campus early in their junior year. Penn only offers Early Decision I and II application dates and Regular Decision. Applying early requires total commitment from the student to attend Penn and is a legally binding agreement. If accepted, a student must attend there.
The average student accepted to Penn has a GPA of 3.91% or higher: SAT scores in the 700 range for both Reading and Math, or an ACT between 33 and 36. Applications must also include an essay, letters of recommendation and Penn-specific short answer essays.
Student Life & Campus Experience
All students entering Penn commit to living on campus for at least two years. Students are assigned to an academic advisor and are guaranteed two supportive academic tutors per year. There are over 900 extracurricular organizations that students can get involved in, including a beekeeping club. If a student is interested in joining a fraternity or sorority, they can rush either in the spring of their freshman or sophomore year. Wellness is a priority at Penn with multiple resources to support physical and mental health.
Planning Your Visit & Next Steps
If you are considering applying to Penn, I highly recommend you tour the campus at least once in your junior and senior year, as well as meet with a professor in your major sometime before you send in your application. Call me. I can help.
